Understanding Ukrainian Adjectives: Basics and Importance

Adjectives in Ukrainian are words that describe or modify nouns, providing more information about their qualities, quantities, or characteristics. For English speakers learning Ukrainian, understanding how adjectives work is essential because they behave differently than in English, especially in terms of agreement and position.

Agreement of Ukrainian Adjectives with Nouns

One of the key features of Ukrainian adjectives is that they must agree with the noun they modify in gender, number, and case. This means the ending of the adjective changes depending on the noun's grammatical properties.

Gender Agreement

Ukrainian nouns have three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. Adjectives change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe.

  • Masculine nouns: adjectives often end in -ий or -ій (e.g., великий – big)
  • Feminine nouns: adjectives often end in or (e.g., велика)
  • Neuter nouns: adjectives often end in or (e.g., велике)

Number Agreement

Adjectives also change to agree with singular or plural nouns.

  • Singular adjectives have specific endings based on gender.
  • Plural adjectives usually end in or regardless of gender (e.g., великі – big, plural).

Case Agreement

Ukrainian has seven grammatical cases, and adjectives change their endings to match the case of the noun they modify. This affects the adjective's ending in all genders and numbers.

For example, the nominative case (used for the subject of a sentence) has different adjective endings than the accusative or genitive cases.

Position of Adjectives in Ukrainian Sentences

Unlike English, where adjectives usually come before the noun, Ukrainian adjectives typically precede the noun they modify. For example, великий будинок means "big house," with the adjective великий before the noun будинок.

However, in some poetic or emphatic contexts, adjectives can follow the noun, but this is less common in everyday speech.

Examples of Ukrainian Adjective Agreement and Position

  • великий будинок

    big house

  • гарна дівчина

    beautiful girl

  • нові автомобілі

    new cars

  • маленьке вікно

    small window
