Understanding Hindi Verb Conjugations for English Learners
The Importance of Learning Hindi Verb Conjugations
Understanding verb conjugations is crucial in Hindi because they change according to tense, mood, and person, giving clarity to who is performing the action and when.
Basic Structure of Hindi Verbs
Hindi verbs usually end in the vowel आ (-aa) in their infinitive form. The root of the verb is derived by removing this ending. For instance, 'to do' is करना (karna), and its root is कर (kar).
Present Tense Conjugation
In the present tense, Hindi verbs are conjugated based on the subject's gender and number (singular or plural). For masculine singular, add ता है (taa hai) to the root verb; for feminine singular, use ती है (ti hai); and for plurals, use ते हैं (te hain).
वह खाता है
He eats
वह खाती है
She eats
वे खाते हैं
They eat
Past Tense Conjugation
For the past tense, the verb is modified by adding ने (ne) to indicate past action. The endings vary as -आ, -ई, -ये for masculine, feminine, and plural forms respectively.
उसने खाया
He ate
उसने खाई
She ate
उन्होंने खाए
They ate
Future Tense Conjugation
In the future tense, endings गा, गी, गे are used for masculine, feminine, and plural subjects respectively. The root remains the same with these endings added.
वह खाएगा
He will eat
वह खाएगी
She will eat
वे खाएंगे
They will eat
