How to Form Negation in Hebrew Sentences
Understanding Basic Negation in Hebrew
In Hebrew, the most common way to negate a sentence is by using the word לא /lo/, which translates to "no" or "not." This word is placed before the verb in a sentence.
Negating Simple Present Sentences
אני לא מבין
I do not understand
היא לא אוכלת
She does not eat
הם לא יודעים
They do not know
Using אין for Existential Negation
Another form of negation in Hebrew is existential negation, which is expressed using the word אין /ein/. This word negates the existence of something, similar to saying "there is no."
אין לחם
There is no bread
אין מים
There is no water
Negating Future Tense
To negate future tense sentences, the word לא is used before the verb, which remains in its future tense form.
אני לא אלך
I will not go
הם לא ישחו
They will not swim
Negation with אין + יש
In Hebrew, the structure אין + יש /yesh/ is used to emphasize the absence of necessity or capability. This translates to "there is no need" or "one cannot."
אין צורך למהר
There is no need to rush
אין לדעת
One cannot know
